El Vacío

Currently various areas of Chile are being severely affected by climate change, especially in water resources. One of the visible consequences is the total disappearance of the river flow, leaving only the rocks where the water previously circulated. This work explores the contrast between the natural erosive action of water on rocks and the erosion created by human action through boulders, fragments of rock polished by the constant erosion of water and found in the riverbeds. The work consists of the visual record of the process of disintegration of a boulder from the Aconcagua River (river that is under water threat in Chile) with a mallet until it is divided and broken. Each hit changes the original shape of the rock, from its rounded shape to ending in jagged and straight fragments. The complete work is made up of 175 images, where each image is equivalent to a blow on the rock.

En la actualidad diversas zonas de Chile están siendo severamente afectadas por el cambio climático, especialmente en materia hídrica. Una de las consecuencias visibles es la desaparición total del caudal de los ríos quedando tan solo las rocas por donde circulaba el agua anteriormente. Este trabajo explora el contraste que existe entre la acción erosiva natural del agua sobre las rocas y la erosión creada por la acción humana a través de los cantos rodados, fragmentos de roca pulidas por la constante erosión del agua y que se encuentran en el lecho de éstos. La obra consiste en el registro visual del proceso de desintegración de un canto rodado proveniente del río Aconcagua (río que está bajo amenaza hídrica en Chile) con un mazo hasta su división y rotura. Cada golpe va cambiando la forma original de la roca, desde su forma redondeada hasta terminar en fragmentos dentados y rectos. La obra completa está compuesta por 175 imágenes, donde cada imagen equivale a un golpe sobre la roca.
